About the test

Both tests are assessed by the D.S.A and the quality and safety of the drive must be paramount to ensure the safety of your passengers and of others. The test will include the following-

• Awareness and anticipation
• Effective planning of prevailing road and traffic conditions
• Correct use of speed
• Emergency stop
• Taxi test manoeuvre
• A manoeuvre involving reverse gear
• Passenger safety and comfort

Taxi test details

• Thirty five to forty minutes driving
• Specially designed routes which reflect everyday conditions
• A verbal debrief at the end of the test
• Documented assessment
• Wheelchair exercise (black cabs only)

When you pass you will receive a test certificate, a debrief and an assessment copy.

You may be aware that the national pass rate for the DSA taxi assessment last year was 50.9% and that two-thirds of those who didn’t pass received serious or dangerous faults-Its worth noting here that just one serious or dangerous fault would be enough to fail a learner test! This pass rate is only slightly higher than the learner rate and is probably due to the fact that as professionals, taxi drivers do not see the need for training- unfortunately the opposite is true. ANY driver after a period of time develops habits, not all good, and would probably not pass the standard driving test again without at least some refresher training.
