Driving Modules

Calm Drivings TRACKER CARD will accelerate your learning skills and allow you to track the progress lesson by lesson. It is important you bring your TRACKER every time you have a lesson. Your instructor will update the TRACKER and explain what each section means.

Each box gets marked as your ability improves:

Box 1 – The subject has been introduced

Box 2 – You are still under full instruction

Box 3 – Your instructor will ask you what you should do rather than tell you

Box 4 – Your instructor will help you rarely (you are close to being competent driver)

Box 5 – There is no help from your instructor you are ready for your test

Cockpit checks

DSSSM= Doors seat steering seat belt and mirrors . You must complete this sequence before you start to drive once your instructor has helped you complete this sequence you may go on to-

Controls and instruments

Your instructor will explain the hand and foot controls to you and help you practice using them.

Moving off and stopping

Your instructor will brief you on how to get your vehicle moving safely and under control you will then drive a short distance using 1st 2nd and 3rd gears and stop safely on the left with plenty of help.


You will be able to emerge and approach junctions safely and under control with good observations you will be taught how to deal with crossroads and deal with venerable road users.

Turn the vehicle around

You will learn how to turn the vehicle around safely with good observations without touching the kerb using forward and reverse gears.


You will be taught how to approach roundabouts where to look judge when its safe to go and how to spot venerable road users. You will be able to turn left go straight and turn right. Complex roundabouts will be dealt with at a later stage.

Use of speed

You will travel through different speed limits safely with good mirror work and learn how to judge safe stopping distances.

Pedestrian crossings

You will learn different types of crossings, know when to stop and when to continue you will need to understand the importance of mirror work round crossings and how to deal with vulnerable road users.

Anticipation and planning

You will need to predict the unpredictable and Look asses decide and act on every potential hazard.

Dual carriageways

You will need to use slip roads safely be able to enter exit and deal with slow moving traffic on slip roads. You will need to make progress on the dual carriageways understand all the markings in daylight and at night.

Emergency stop

You must learn how to stop your car in an emergency promptly under control as if a child has run out in front of you. You must drive off safely after this manoeuvre.

Crossing traffic

You must be able to cross the path of traffic from a major road into a minor road and minor to major. You must learn how to do this without changing the speed of the oncoming vehicle.


You must be drive onto the right hand side of the road , reverse two car lengths and then safely drive back onto the left hand side of the road.  This is a good way to test a safe driver as you need good observational skills to complete this manoeuvre.


You must be able to reverse behind a car into a small space and also drive forward and reverse into a parking bay with good observational skills.

Meeting traffic

You must be able to deal with parked vehicles on either side and know when to stop and let traffic through and when to proceed and make progress. Good mirror work is essential to keep yourself safe and other safe.


You must learn to overtake safely with good mirror work and shoulder checks where necessary.

Darkness and weather

You will be taught to drive at night and in all kinds of weather conditions so that you have a thorough understanding of all the controls and know how to stop safely in adverse weather conditions.
