Your theory test is booked through GOV.UK and taken at a DVSA test centre. It comes in two halves, sat back to back in the same appointment: fifty multiple-choice questions, then the hazard perception clips.
You need to pass both in that one sitting. There is no averaging between them and no carrying a pass forward — fall short on either and the whole test is booked and taken again.
Questions drawn from the Highway Code, road signs, vehicle safety and safe driving practice. You need 43 correct to pass, so you can miss seven and still be fine. You can flag anything you are unsure of and come back to it before you finish.

Pass and your certificate lasts two years. Your practical test has to happen inside that window, or the theory has to be taken again — so do not leave a long gap between the two.
Fewer than half of theory tests are passed. The three reasons we see most often are learning answers by rote instead of understanding the reasoning behind them, treating hazard perception as an afterthought until test day, and booking the test before the revision has actually been done. None of those are difficulty problems — they are preparation problems, and they are fixable.
